Definition
- Bigender is a gender identity that falls under the non-binary umbrella. To identify as bigender generally means you identify as two genders. You could identify as both at the same time. You can go back and forth between two genders. Perhaps you have one stagnant gender identity and one that shifts while still only identifying as two genders. However you experience it, it has to do something with the number two. It does not necessarily mean you identify as a man and a woman. There are more genders than that.
Usage
Bigender is used as an adjective generally.
- I’m bigender.
- Oh my goodness, I just met the cutest person the other day. They’re bigender and like neutral pronouns. They’re into knitting and folk-punk. What a dreamboat.

Well fuck.

That’s okay! No, it doesn’t mean that - or, at least for me it doesn’t. It might mean that for other people though; I’m not entirely learned on this either. Generally, it means that sometimes I behave more masculine than feminine, and vice versa, depending on the context of the situation. For example, if I’m hanging out with my guy friends, I slip into a more masculine persona and feel more comfortable in that kind of facet than if I was in a feminine persona.
I’ve tagged better explanations here; not sure if mine do any justice. Basically though, you can be bigender and straight, or bigender and gay, or bigender and any other sexuality.
here’s the definition from gender wiki. Its the most accurate description I could find.
http://gender.wikia.com/wiki/Bigender
A Bigender person is a person who feels that their gender is fully male and fully female, or any pair of genders, generally by switching between the two. For some people, the switch is between two very distinct genders, which some consider to be separate “facets” or ”personas”. For others, the switch is much more fluid, with more grey area.
Transitioning is a difficult idea for many bigenders. Because they have both a male and female gender, assuming they aren’t intersexed, then when they’re in the gender that matches their body they’re as happy with their body as a Cisgender person, but when they’re in the gender that doesn’t match their body they feel the same dysphoria and need to transition that most Transgender people feel. It’s not currently possible to create a body that changes from male to female at will, so it can be difficult for a bigender person to achieve a presentation or body that allows them to be comfortable in both genders.
The difference from an androgyne is in the integration of the two genders: androgynes are one gender which incorporates feminine with masculine characteristics into one more-or-less coherent whole, while bigenders are two genders that are expressed separately. There’s also a difference of degree: androgynes are neither fully man nor fully woman, while bigenders can switch between identifying fully as one gender and fully as another.
This is a better definition for you, curious anon.
Bigender: “To identify as both genders and/or to have a tendency to move between masculine and feminine gender-typed behavior depending on context, expressing a distinctly male persona and a distinctly female persona, two separate genders in one body.”(via GenderQueer and Queer Terms from the Tumblr “genderqueerid.com”)
